These are limited edition gicleé prints on canvas. They are professional scanned to make them virtually indistinguishable from the original. They ship in a roll and come with a personalized, handwritten letter from the artist, and a certificate of authenticity. “When we were girls” was inspired by my love of history and black women and girls. Based loosely on a photograph taken in the 1950’s, this painting attempts to capture the various layers of black women’s and girls’ complex humanity. The girls at play are juxtaposed by their maternal figures gazing longingly out of the windows. Are the maternal figures watching over the children, daydreaming, taking a quick break from the tolls of motherhood, or engrossed in reflections of their own childhoods. The truth is, it could be none of these things or all of them. The beauty of this piece, then, is bound up in the ability of the viewer to add her own interpretation. The dialectic between the viewer and the art, which creates and personalizes the meaning, demonstrates that the art is forever alive and evolving.
