The Catch

I grew up in a family of fishermen/women and activists. This painting (which is based on a photograph of my first cousin) embodies all of these impulses. “The Catch,” of course, has double meaning. The obvious is on full display. The less obvious is depicted on the t-shirt. It is the story within the story that encompasses what it means to be black in America. That’s why it remains vitally important for us to narrate our histories and tell our stories on our own terms.
