Audre Lorde once proclaimed that for black women "self-care" was a revolutionary act. Though black women have historically had little choice but to find a way out of no-way, their humanity is not somehow more resilient or impervious to assault than anyone else. We have created self-sacrifice as a noble quality for black women and it has become too heavy a burden for black women to bear. Lorde understood this all too well and her powerful words hold as true now as they were over thirty years when she uttered them.
