This painting was inspired by Langston Hughes’ poem “Mother to Son.” The poem is an endearing plea by a mother for her son to find resilience in struggle. Her message to him is to follow her lead; to understand that challenges are a fact of life and must be faced not avoided. Defeat is not an option, especially for a little black boy.
