Resilience Series
This painting is inspired by an iconic photograph from the Civil Rights Movement. Notice the exhaustion on her face. Behind the expression is a dogged determination to be free, to have equality. She expects to be beaten. Spat upon. Harassed. She woke up knowing that her plight was hard. Fear was pulsing through her body. But her determination; her will to be treated as a true citizen of her country was not to be denied. So she made her sign, got dressed, ate breakfast, and headed downtown to protest with her black peers. Her name will not be etched in the annals of history. We will not write of her bravery by name. She will be a face in the crowd of other faces. Humans protesting; fighting to be heard and seen. She will suffer for her convictions but she will win. Move mountains. There is no future without her; there is no America. She is legendary.
