This painting bespeaks the sweet science that is jazz. The famous writer Ralph Ellison once wrote that jazz captured the tragic-comedy of life, and black life in particular. What seems so free flowing and improvised however is the culmination of intense practice and mastery. So the best of the best jazz musicians make their craft seem effortless when the reality is quite the opposite. Few, if indeed any, could do it better than the great Dizzie Gillespie, featured in this painting. Blow baby blow!
